Mödling is a picturesque town at the edge of the Vienna Woods, known for its well-preserved medieval center, the ruins of Mödling Castle, and its association with Ludwig van Beethoven. The old town features colorful Baroque buildings, the Gothic St. Othmar's Church, and the Spitalkirche. The main square, Freiheitsplatz, is a hub of cafes and shops. Above the town, the Mödling Castle ruins (Burg Mödling) perch on a hill, offering views of the surrounding forest. Beethoven spent several summers in Mödling, composing parts of his Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis at a house on Hauptstraße. The Beethoven Museum in the town documents his stays. Mödling also has a lively cultural scene, with concerts and festivals. The nearby Wienerwald hiking trails make it a popular base for nature lovers.
