The Tauern Railway is a stunning mountain railway that winds through the Hohe Tauern range, connecting Bad Gastein with Schwarzach im Pongau. Built between 1901 and 1909, the line is an engineering marvel, with numerous tunnels and viaducts that navigate the steep alpine terrain. The most famous section is the 8.5 km-long Tauern Tunnel, one of the longest in Austria at the time of construction. As the train climbs, passengers are treated to dramatic views of deep valleys, towering peaks, and the Gastein Waterfall from above. The journey is particularly spectacular in autumn when the forests are ablaze with color, or in winter when snow blankets the landscape. The Tauern Railway remains a vital transport link and a beloved scenic route for travelers.
