Lake Altaussee (Altausseer See) is a pristine alpine lake nestled beneath the towering Loser and Trisselwand mountains. Its emerald-green waters, fed by underwater springs, are remarkably clear and inviting for swimmers in the summer months. The lake is relatively small, about 2.1 km long and 0.7 km wide, but its setting is nothing short of spectacular, with steep forested slopes and rocky peaks reflected in the calm surface. A well-maintained trail circles the entire lake, offering easy walking with constant views. On warm days, the designated swimming area at the northern end is popular, with a grassy lawn and a small beach. For a more secluded experience, find a spot along the less-developed southern shore. The lake also serves as a starting point for hikes up the Loser, where a cable car can take you to the summit for panoramic vistas. Whether you're swimming, hiking, or simply picnicking, Lake Altaussee embodies the serene beauty of the Salzkammergut.
Don't miss
- Swim in the clear, cool waters at the designated beach area
- Walk or cycle the 6.5 km trail around the lake
- Take the Loser cable car for mountain views from above
- Picnic on the grassy shores with a backdrop of peaks
- Photograph the lake's reflection at sunrise or sunset
