The Port Macquarie Government House Site marks the location of the original government house, built in the early 1820s for the commandant of the penal settlement. Though the building no longer stands, a commemorative plaque and interpretive signage explain its historical significance. Visitors can stand on the grounds, which now form part of a park with sweeping views of the Hastings River. The site evokes the authority and daily operations of the colonial administration that oversaw convicts and shaped the town's early development.
