St Patrick's Cathedral is Melbourne's grandest church and the seat of the city's Catholic archbishop, a magnificent Gothic Revival cathedral, one of the largest and tallest churches in Australia. Built of local bluestone, its soaring spires (added in the 20th century), pointed arches, flying buttresses, and richly detailed interior make it a masterpiece of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture, modelled on the great medieval cathedrals of Europe. Inside, the lofty nave, stained-glass windows, ornate sanctuary, and beautiful proportions create a serene, awe-inspiring space.

Set in landscaped grounds on the edge of the city centre (near Fitzroy Gardens and Parliament), it's a peaceful and impressive stop, free to enter and welcoming to visitors. The grounds include a statue of St Patrick and a memorial to Daniel O'Connell. Allow half an hour to admire the architecture and the calm interior; respectful dress and quiet are appreciated as it's an active place of worship.
