Shoghakat Church, built in 1694 by Prince Aghamal Sorotetsi, is a striking example of late medieval Armenian architecture. Its name means 'ray of light,' referencing a vision of light that led to the discovery of a martyr's relics. The church is constructed from warm red tuff stone, giving it a distinctive hue. Inside, the simple nave is lit by natural light, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can explore the adjacent cemetery and enjoy the quiet gardens, offering a contrast to the nearby grander structures.
Don't miss
- The red tuff stone exterior, especially beautiful in late afternoon sun
- The interior's natural lighting and simple, elegant design
- The adjacent cemetery with ancient khachkars (cross-stones)
