Our Lady of Meritxell is a modern basilica constructed between 1976 and 1978 on the site of a Romanesque church that burned down in 1972. Designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, the basilica blends contemporary design with traditional elements, featuring a slate roof and a striking mosaic of the Virgin by artist Sergi Mas. The original 12th-century Romanesque statue of the Virgin was lost in the fire; a replica now resides in the basilica. The site is a major pilgrimage destination, especially on September 8, the feast day of Meritxell.
