Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni

Great experience. They have 2 different menù, 6 courses each, we decided to combine them. Food was perfect. The service was great. The wines were awesome and well explained.

After a few disappointing experiences with more casual restaurants in Switzerland, this restaurant really was a great experience. It is inside the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Once we got inside the hotel, we were handed over to the maitre d, Emanuel. He greeted us and as he knew we were tourist, he explained to us the name Prato Borni is actually the old name of Zermatt and Zermatt was started by a number of families who helped in the construction of the town. These families still have partial ownership of the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Then he showed us a wall with the award the restaurant had won and the open kitchen. This is all before we even got into the restaurant! We felt so much like VIPs and welcomed to the restaurant. Emanuel then handled us off to the restaurant who continued their excellent service. The service was very professional yet friendly. Very hard to get this balance correct. All the staff had nice smiles and were very elegant in all their service. I didn't get the name of our waiter but our sommelier, Michaela, was superb. She had a degree in agriculture so she was very knowledgeable. Really think she is going to be star once she has a little more experience. They have 2 different menus: Alpine and International. I choose the Alpine menu and you can choose from 4, 5 or 6 courses. You can also switch from Alpine to International for any given course as long as your whole table has the same thing. My favourite courses were the Perch Pike, Duck and Pig. You can see my video review on my Youtube channel. I paired with Swiss wines and Michaela was so good at guiding me through all the different Swiss grape varietals. Very, very good experience. I thought the ambiance and service were actually at a 2 star level. Food was excellent also but probably at a 1 star level. Although the food was prepared very well and traditionally, I didn't think it had the innovation that I would see at 2 star Michelin level restaurants. .

We were in Zermatt on a Tauck tour of Switzerland and chose this restaurant for our wedding anniversary dinner based on the Tripadvisor reviews. The experience exceeded our expectations! Everything about this resturant is top quality--the atmosphere, the staff, the food, the pace of service. My compliments to the restaurant management. They have created something very special. I haven't written a Tripadvisor review in a long time but I couldn't go without acknowledging the excellence of this establishment.
